DLD

Developmental Language Disorder

What is DLD?

‘Developmental Language Disorder’ (DLD) is identified when children, young people or adults have difficulties with understanding the language they hear or speaking in sentences to express meaning.

DLD can be used to describe the condition if there is no other cause for the language difficulties, such as autism.

Why should we use this term?

Agreed terminology is the first step to increasing awareness, providing coherent information to parents, children and young people, accessing funding for research and developing the best possible services.
